Brief Profile

Shipbuilding Institute of Polytechnic Surabaya (SHIPS) is a vocational higher education institution, which focuses on the teaching and learning process to develop skills and competency based on the needs of industries. Today, PPNS is the only polytechnic focusing on shipbuilding and its related technology in Indonesia.

By applying several concepts, PPNS is committed to producing high-quality graduates. Link and Match Concept is a competency-based curriculum that has been matched with stakeholder or industry needs. PPNS also applies the Teaching Factory concept which combines realistic and relevant learning and works environment.

PPNS atmosphere fosters creativity and innovation in order to enhance the development of maritime technology in Indonesia. Besides education and research, PPNS also provides training, certification, services, and production centers for professionals and industry.

Programs, qualifications, and courses, and the underlying methodology of how they are delivered are developed in consultation with businesses, industries, professions, and international education and training institutions. This strategy will ensure that our graduates meet the needs of the labor market, supporting Indonesia and the global market with a source of highly skilled graduates.

Learning System

PPNS is a university that provides vocational education in shipping and its supporting technology and is the only one in Indonesia. Unlike universities, education in polytechnics has its characteristics. Polytechnics have two concepts that are implemented and affect the teaching and learning process in PPNS.

Teaching Factory: Also called Production Based Learning or production-based learning. Students will learn to produce and do work like in the industry.

Link and Match: Curriculum and course materials are tailored to industry needs. PPNS has had several collaborations in the Industrial Advisory Board, where one of its main functions is updating the curriculum to keep abreast of technological developments used in industry.

The tuition load that students must carry out is a minimum of 110 credits for the Diploma III program and 144 credits for the Diploma IV program. The implementation of the load of 1 credit is 50 minutes face-to-face, 50 minutes structured assignments, and 50 minutes independent assignments. In the implementation of education, students must follow the learning process for approximately 38 hours per week (1 hour = 50 minutes). This process must be done because the load of 1 SKS is carried out in class for 2 hours (50 minutes of face-to-face and 50 minutes of structured assignments), very different from implementing the 1 SKS academic pathway, which is only carried out in class for 50 minutes.

Given the tight schedule of learning activities, new students need a quick adaptation process because the number of hours of study while still in SMA/SMK is less than 38 hours per week.
