PPNS Industrial Advisory Board: Build a Link and Match between Academic and Industry

Alignment of the vision and mission of the industry is one of the ways used by the Shipbuilding Institute of Polytechnic Surabaya (PPNS) to produce a competent generation. Therefore, PPNS organizes an Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) annual activity.

IAB is an annual Surabaya State Shipping Polytechnic annual program that invites industries in the maritime sector and supports industries in other fields as a forum for the Surabaya State Shipping Polytechnic to increase relevance and competence with industry needs. The event was attended by representatives from industry, companies, associations, and international training institutions.

The event was opened with remarks from the Director of PPNS Ir. Eko Julianto, M.Sc., FRINA, about polytechnic graduates, especially in shipping and supporting technology. “Human education is an intangible need like building a house or building a structure. The process takes a long time. So, right today, we are trying to equate perceptions that are packaged in a single unit from various parties as a whole.”

“As for these parties, namely the government, industry, academia, communities or professional associations as well as the role of the media, it is very much needed in supporting education that produces superior human resources and according to needs,” he said in a press interview on Wednesday.

He also stated that PPNS as a university supports the development of the maritime industry through the active role of various alumni by the needs of today’s industry. “Needs and times are changing, dealing with these changes we must anticipate ensuring the appropriate relevance to the realization of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education which includes Education, Research and Community Service with Industrial needs,” said Eko.

The central government supports the PPNS strategy in producing competent human resources through the Directorate of Vocational and Professional Education, Ministry of Education and Culture.

This statement was stated by the Director of Vocational and Professional Education, Dr. Benny Bandanadjaya, ST., MT. through various programs in the future, then adjusted through the curriculum in PPNS and universities throughout Indonesia.

One of them is the Diploma 2 (D-2) acceleration program given to Vocational High Schools (SMK) to obtain a faster escalation of competent human resources.

“This program is implemented not only in PPNS. Instead, all Polytechnics have implemented this program. As many as 33 study programs in various Polytechnics throughout Indonesia, have run the Fast Track Vocational School program,” said Benny.

Benny explained that the program started in 2020 is expected to increase the quality of reliable human resources for industrial needs. In particular, various maritime industries have collaborated with PPNS in meeting their needs.

“We hope that this Fast-track D2 program, SMK graduates who have been given a 1.5-year lecture program on campus, will always be skilled, so that industries do not need to retrain,” added Beny.

“If it is like this, being quick and easy does not require a high position to fill operator positions such as welding or repairing,” he hoped. Rasman Manafi, as Assistant Deputy for Maritime Resources Coordination, Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenkomarves), said that 4 policies have been made, namely the occupational map of the workforce, data collection on industrial human resources, and cooperation between ministries and agencies.” Vocational education and training are included in the strategy for strengthening industrial human resources because the existing curriculum aligns with industry needs.
