History of Ships

The forerunner to the founding of the Naval Polytechnic was the 1979 PAT (Technical Expert Education) Non-Degree Program, Department of Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding Engineering, which had its campus on Jalan Basuki Rachmad Surabaya. Changes in the organizational structure applicable to the University/Institute following Government Regulation no. 5 of 1980, Government Regulation No. 27 of 1981, and Presidential Decree No. 58 of 1982 resulted in the non-degree programs in 1982 being grouped into the Faculty of Non-Degree Technology, which includes the Department of Marine Engineering.

In 1982 the government established 6 polytechnics, namely the USU Medan Polytechnic, the Palembang UNSRI Polytechnic, the UI Jakarta Polytechnic, the Bandung ITB Polytechnic, the UNDIP Polytechnic Semarang, and the UB Polytechnic of Malang. The establishment of the Polytechnic Educational Institution as an educational institution with special expertise has received a good response from the community. Seeing that the Polytechnic was producing results and having good prospects, through the “loan agreement” program with the World Bank in 1986, the government offered to open a new Polytechnic at ITS through the Directorate General of Higher Education. The Chancellor of ITS at that time, Ir. Harjono Sigit BS accepted the offer and established the Surabaya Marine Polytechnic – ITS. The physical construction of the college building was immediately carried out, and 1987 was the first year the Marine Polytechnic accepted new students with the Director Prof. Ir. Soegiono under the Faculty of Non-Degree Technology (FNGT) ITS.

From 1987 to 1998 (for 11 years), the Shipping Polytechnic received a grant from the West German Government through the Gesellschaft fϋr Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), which was allocated to:

HR Development.
Complement existing laboratory equipment.
Technical Assistance.
Since 1991 based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No.0310/O/1991 regarding the arrangement of Polytechnics within the University and Institute, the name of the ITS FNGT Shipping Polytechnic was changed to the Surabaya Shipping Polytechnic and is no longer under the FNGT organizational structure but is still part of ITS. Based on the Decree of the Minister of State for Empowerment of State Apparatus Number B-703/1/1995 1995, the name of the Surabaya Shipping Polytechnic was changed to the Surabaya State Shipping Polytechnic. Based on the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 6 of 2014 and the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 42 of 2014, the Surabaya State Shipping Polytechnic has officially declared an independent university. It is the only State Polytechnic in charge of shipping.

In the era of globalization, the name of the Surabaya State Shipping Polytechnic (PPNS) is known as the Shipbuilding Institute of Polytechnic Surabaya (SHIPS).

PPNS is always ready to face global competition and continues to improve to capture current opportunities. Therefore, human resource development continues to be carried out, both educators and education staff through training and further studies to a higher level (S3). Rejuvenation of laboratory equipment, the addition of lecture halls, and the improvement of facilities and infrastructure for college buildings are also carried out to answer the needs of stakeholders for the quality of graduates.

The above can be done because PPNS always takes advantage of the opportunities provided by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (RISTEKDIKTI) to participate in the Competition Grant Program (PHK) and some Research and Community Service. Several Competition Grant Programs obtained by the Shipping Polytechnic include: Due – like; TPSDP (Technological and Professional Skills Development Sector Project), INHERENT (Indonesian Higher Education Network), IMHERE (Indonesia Managing Higher Education for Relevancy & Efficiency), and PEDP (Polytechnic Education Development Project). PPNS has also won the trust of several companies, government agencies, and state-owned enterprises to cooperate to improve human resources’ quality and competence. PPNS also made a big contribution to the Indonesian maritime world by compiling National Competency Standards in shipping.

With the above capabilities, PPNS is determined to develop itself. From initially focusing on education at the Diploma-3 (Advanced Diplome) level, PPNS also leads to the Bachelor of Applied Technology (Bachelor of Applied Technology) level, which is taken within 4 (four) years. The target for the next 2 (two) years (2018) PPNS will also hold an Applied Masters program (S2) that focuses on the field of Maritime Technology. The list of Departments (Departments) and Study Programs currently available at PPNS can be seen in the table.
